I am poor, poor, poor this year, but my birthday was Sunday, and I got the annual Birthday Check from my grandparents. It’s one dollar for each year of my life, and one to grow on. I’ve thrown in a dollar of my own, to round it up to $25. Because, really, do I need another pair of shoes? No. But these kids do, and books and pencils and stuff, too, and if the Birthday Check can make that happen, then that’s how it happens.

The well-meaning website, trying to protect against accidental double-clicks, rejected my duplicate transaction, so I raised it to $30 the second time.
