Rupert Holmes: Partners In Crime

Song: “Answering Machine

I know you might not always click the link to the lyrics that I provide, but with these Rupert songs, you’re going to want to go the extra click.

You know Rupert Holmes. He wrote “Escape (The Pina Colada Song),” a song about two people wanting to cheat on their spouses, but end up answering each other’s personal ads and re-fall in love again at a bar, probably as they met originally, over some Pina Coladas. Continue reading

Toussaint McCall (and Various): Hairspray Soundtrack

Song: “Nothing Takes The Place Of You

I’m supposed to be writing something else right now, but this song started playing and completely pulled me away. Any song from the Hairspray soundtrack — and by that I mean the movie that inspired the Broadway musical that inspired a movie I plan on never seeing — always makes me stop for a second. The songs aren’t the kind I listen to normally, but they are immediate mood changers.

PAMIE
Hey, I was thinking about the lyrics to “True Love Waits.”

STEE
The Radiohead song?

PAMIE
Uh-huh.

STEE
It’s like, “Duh-NUUUUH-NUUH-NAAH-NUHHH!”

PAMIE
Right. Like, “I shout out my duhhhnnnh!”

STEE
Perfect for a wedding.

PAMIE
It’s simple, though. One guitar, and then that weird beeping, and one person singing.

STEE
It’s an import, right? Not on an album?

PAMIE
I don’t think so. I was trying to figure out the lyrics on the plane. It’s something like, “I love your crazy smile.” And then there’s something about “True love waits in haunted hotels.” Something about crossing a hundred highways to be together.

STEE
“Dunnnh-NUH-NAAA-NUH-WAITS!”

PAMIE
Although I think the chorus is “Lonely. Loooonely!”

STEE
You just want Radiohead at the wedding.

PAMIE
Kinda.

STEE
“Cut the kids in half?”

PAMIE
“We hope that you choke, that you choke!”

STEE
Google the lyrics.

PAMIE
We can’t do “A Punchup at a Wedding” either.

STEE
No, I suppose not. But “True Love Waits” is a pretty song.

PAMIE
Here goes. Oh.

STEE
Let me see. Oh.

PAMIE
Yeah.
