The Strokes: First Impressions of Earth

Song: “Razorblade

Yeah, that second album wasn’t so hot, but this one’s much better.

There are a number of bands I’d like better if I had no idea what the musicians looked like. This is one of those bands. Franz Ferdinand, Death Cab for Cutie… even some authors I’d be much more impressed with if I never saw their faces (ask Laura to do her James Frey impression for you).

With songs and stories we fill in our own images, so the reality can sometimes be disappointing. I remember the first time I put a picture of myself on this site, so many years ago, I got mail from some of you saying I just didn’t fit the image you had of me in your heads. I know that feeling. I sound like someone to you, or look like someone to you, and when you see who I really am, it’s just not the same thing. Sometimes it’s not good enough.

So with The Strokes, because I like the music, I pretend I have no idea what they look like, and that they are from the past. It’s much easier that way.
