sing out loud

Overheard this weekend as I walked back to my table after finishing a heartfelt rendition of “A Natural Woman”:

Guy #1
That’s hot.

Guy #2
That’s Hot?

Guy#3
Well…

I was talking about this with Dan last night, how I always enter the Karaoke joint thinking, “Tonight I’ll just play it cool. Sit back. Enjoy the show. There’s no need to act like a moron in front of all these people.” And then half an hour later I’m rolling on the floor, possibly touching my crotch.

“Oh, I know,” Dan said. “It’s how we met.”

This weekend I was going to “play it cool” and ended up onstage no less than six times. I touched strangers. A group of hipsters in 80′s gear danced in front of us so we couldn’t see the stage. I stole their hats and gave them to other people. And they let me. The last time I was at this particular establishment, the girl who couldn’t stop dancing like she was both Romy and Michele became the centerpiece of my rendition of Pearl Jam’s “Black.” I crawled between her legs and we got to at least first base.

A) Why do I do this?
B) Why do people continue to let me?

Yesterday I checked a book out of the library that I realized this morning I’ve already read. This year. I checked out from the same library, which means its the exact same book.

So here’s what it’s like, these days, to be me. It’s what it’s like to live this life, this place where each day is as unpredictable as the next.

This morning we planned our honeymoon around Sundance, because stee and Frank are finalists for the filmmaker’s lab. They won’t know until December 17th if they got in, but we knew if we scheduled the honeymoon at the same time as the lab, they’d be sure to get in. Also we couldn’t make it any later, because we’re waiting to hear what’s going to happen with the Oxygen show, as well as Stee’s own show he’s developing with the WB.

But we are GOING on our HONEYMOON. We’ve been looking forward to it since we got engaged — the possibility of several days of nothing to do, nowhere to go, no phone calls or deadlines. We’ve found a place that’s supposed to be incredibly isolated and quiet and beachy and I’m looking forward to living in my bikini for a few days.

Phone is ringing. Stee’s agent.

Want to see Buttleman, the movie starting one talented stee (and Deadwood‘s John Hawkes), directed by one talented Francis Stokes, with music from the incredibly talented Adam Blau and a cameo of yours truly?

It’s as easy as going to your local indie video store and taking part in the Had To Be Made film festival.

According to my Forerunner 201, in the past six months I’ve run 147 miles. I’ve run for over a day straight — 32 hours and 32 minutes — for a total of 14,109 calories burned. (That’s almost five pounds.)

In 2000, I ran 0 miles in 0 hours, 0 minutes. So while I may not have run even a half-marathon this year, in terms of my own life I’ve made quite a bit of progress.

Gilmore Girls Recap 5.9

She Seems To Have an Invisible Touch:

She reaches in and makes you feel like you’ve done something wrong, but you’re not quite sure what it is, but she’s mad and you can tell by the pout on her face that all the free food in the world isn’t going to fix. Is it something you did or didn’t do? Man, it could be either with a Gilmore woman. Best to just give her everything she wants constantly, with lots of apologies. Maybe order a pizza, too. Rory rips Christopher another new one when he just can’t stay away from his baby’s mama. Richard’s baby’s mama’s busy looking for a new boo. Boys bore Rory to sleep. Paris observes Ramadan.

Three Questions

A few months ago I was asked to write a piece for Fresh Yarn. It was the first thing I ever brought to our writing group (which I hope stee starts up again soon). I’ve been a fan of this site from the beginning and have been anxiously waiting for my piece to go online. Today it did. Don’t forget to go through the archives. There are some great essays on that site.

Sometimes the week gets away from me, in terms of this website. When that happens, when a huge week goes by and I haven’t been writing about it, the thought of trying to catch up can seem quite daunting. I’m having one of those weeks when I wonder why we have this relationship, you and I, where I talk about what’s going on and you sometimes write back to tell me you agree or don’t agree or hate me or think I’m funny, or that one guy who constantly asks me to send him pictures of my calves.

Tea For You

I’m jealous of all the Northern California people who could go to this High Tea. Dan and I had high tea a few months ago, and part of us will always be at Casa Del Mar, sharing a salmon finger sandwich. I’m pimping the Sugarplum Tea not just because it’s being thrown by our pretty, smart, fantastic and talented cake lady, but because the menu makes me drool. I don’t even understand where it is, but I’d go there if I could.
